I made a trip to Mt. St. Helens in July 2001. Here is a collection of the
pictures that I took on that trip. I lucked out and had great weather for the
trip. Each of the pictures when clicked will open in a larger image in a new
window.
This picture shows the channels
in the dirt in ash that the mudslide took when the mountain erupted.
Here is another picture
that shows the channels even better
This is a good picture of
the crater.
Here is another picture
of the crater.
Here is another one of
the crater.
Here is the mountain from
a distance. We were on our way up the road to get closer to the mountain.
Here is another one from
further away.
This is the North Fork of
the Toutle River. The eruption sent lots of mud and ash down this river
during the eruption.
There was a herd of elk
standing in the river. They didn't show up in my picture however.
In this picture you can
see that the river made its own way on the other side of some land during
the mudslides.
This is another picture
that was supposed to show the elk feeding. Unfortunately my camera isn't
good enough for them to show up.
This is just a view of the
river as it comes down from the mountain.
Here is a picture of the
side of the river. See how deep the mudslides were from the side of the
river.
This is another look at
the depth of the mudslide.
This is a picture at the
Sediment Dam. You can see how the water made its own way.
This is another picture
at the dam.
Here is a look at the sediment
dam.
Another look at the depth
of the mudslide from a distance.
See how the mudslide made its way down in two different forks of the
river.
Here is the stone walls
created by the mudslides from a distance.
This picture shows how the trees were just laid over by the force
and heat of the eruption.
Here is another look at all the dead trees still laying on the hill
sides among the fresh growth.
